Driving Progress: Highlights from the Chamber's 82nd Annual Meeting

BOLD Commerical Real Estate

The Chamber’s 82nd Annual Meeting was a powerful gathering of over 300 business and community leaders at Koury Auditorium in the Kenan-Flagler Business School. This year’s theme, Driving Progress, celebrated innovation, collaboration, and resilience—key factors propelling Chapel Hill and Carrboro forward. The event provided a platform for discussing crucial issues like workforce development, housing affordability, and small business support while honoring individuals making a significant impact in our community.

At BOLD, we're all about progress. We're all about challenging each other to get better each and every day. And it's the same thing this Chamber does—it challenges our community to get better each and every day. That’s one of the many reasons we at BOLD choose to support this Chamber of Commerce. So we thank the Chamber for all it does. BOLD Companies is a proud sponsor of this event.

Event Recap and Key Takeaways

Reconnecting and Celebrating Success

The BOLD Companies team had the pleasure of reconnecting with many of our clients across commercial, construction, and residential sectors. The energy in the room was palpable, as local businesses and organizations came together to reflect on achievements and discuss future opportunities.

A highlight of the event was the red carpet reception, sponsored by Adkin CPA, one of our commercial real estate clients.

One of our favorite moments? The Poetry Fox, a typewriter poet, created heartfelt poems for attendees.

2024 Milestones from the Chamber

With 82 years of service behind it, the Chamber reflected on its 2024 milestones, including:

  • 107 programs and events supporting business growth and community engagement.

  • A successful campaign advocating for $344M in bond referenda, funding schools, infrastructure, and economic development.

  • A 90% member retention rate, highlighting the strength and impact of Chamber initiatives.

Fireside Chat with UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts

One of the most anticipated discussions of the evening was the fireside chat with UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Lee Roberts, who provided insights into:

  • The impact of potential federal budget cuts on UNC’s operations.

  • Plans for relocating the Smith Center, though a final decision is still pending.

  • The University’s recent successes, including record-high undergraduate applications in 2024 and the 23rd national championship for the Women’s Soccer team.

Honoring Local Leaders

The Chamber also took time to recognize remarkable leaders in the community. Among them:

  • Scott Maitland, owner of Top of the Hill, received the Chair's Award for Service to The Chamber. A highly respected figure in Chapel Hill, Scott’s influence extends far beyond his business, making this recognition well deserved.

  • Brian Litchfield, Executive Director of Chapel Hill Transit, was awarded the Chair's Award for Public-Private Partnership for his contributions to the region’s transit system.

  • Jackie Jenks, President and CEO of the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service, received the Duke Energy Citizenship and Service Award. Jackie was announced as this year’s recipient at the Annual Meeting, and the award will be formally presented at an upcoming Town Council meeting.

A Powerful Poem for Black History Month

In a moving tribute to Black History Month, poet Dasan Ahanu performed an original spoken word piece highlighting the resilience and contributions of Chapel Hill’s Black community. Accompanied by a slideshow featuring Black-owned businesses and business leaders—many of whom are our clients and partners—the poem was a poignant reminder of the history, struggle, and perseverance that shape our town.

Water & Sewer Expansion and Affordable Housing

Another major focus of the event was the recent approval of the water and sewer boundary expansion along Hwy 15-501 from Southern Village to the Chatham County line. This decision, a direct result of Chamber advocacy, will pave the way for:

  • New affordable housing developments close to major employers and public transit.

  • Increased access to essential infrastructure, benefiting businesses and residents alike.

  • Economic growth along a key corridor, aligning with long-term community development goals.

Looking forward, the Chamber is committed to workforce development, housing affordability, and small business growth. The event served as a reminder that true progress comes from collaboration—and BOLD Companies is proud to be part of the movement shaping our community’s future.
